Obituary for Catharina Maria "Cathy" Berg (Arnold)

Catharina Maria "Cathy" Berg (Arnold)
Catharina M. Berg, 81, of Lambertville, NJ, died on Thursday, December 22, 2016.

Known to all as Cathy, she was born in Altdorf, Switzerland. A Lambertville resident since 1985, she came to the United States in 1956. She married her beloved husband, the late Robert E. Berg in 1958. Cathy was a creative, energetic and multi-talented woman. She was a gifted cook, homemaker and organizer. As a devoted wife and mother, Cathy developed her own career opportunities around her family life. A graduate of the Culinary Institute in New York, she was a caterer, baker and landscaper. She started “First Nighter”, a welcome gift basket for new home buyers. She baked desserts for local restaurants, such as the Hamilton Grill Room. In recent years she worked at Jim Alterman’s Gallery in Lambertville. She had her own secret garden on the Delaware where she grew her own vegetables and flowers.

Active in the community, Cathy lent her talents to many local organizations. She was a patron of the Riverside Symphonia, opening her home to their events and hosting their progressive dinners. She also was a hostess to the annual house tour of the Lambertville Historical Society. Cathy was a volunteer for the Community Lunch at the Centenary United Methodist Church, making a soup every week since the program’s inception. Cathy also volunteered at the Mercer Medical Center’s Thrift Shop and was honored by that group on the 25th anniversary of her service. She was a member of the Kalmia Club and a parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Church in Lambertville. She enjoyed playing tennis, collecting fine art and strolling the town with her dog.

Cathy Berg was a loyal friend and a good neighbor. She was the first to reach out to anyone in need, experiencing a loss or illness. You could not have a better friend than Cathy Berg.

Cathy was the beloved wife of the late Robert E. Berg and the daughter of the late Karl and Katharina Herger Arnold. She was the much loved mother of Bette Anne Berg and her husband Douglas McLeod of London, England, Edward Arnold Berg and his wife Christine of Boston, MA, Robert Thomas Berg and his fiancé Cathy Stephan of Doylestown, PA and Susan Ventura and her husband Christopher of Milford, NJ; the proud grandmother of Jonathan, Erin and Gretchen Berg, Kyle and Tyler Stephan. Cathy was the sister of Anna Marie Reger of Payson, AZ, Olga Gisler of Altdorf, Switzerland, Veronica Hartman of Zurich, Switzerland and Pauli Grotimund of Weggis, Switzerland and the late Marguerite Nastasi, Carolyn Marty and Karl Arnold and the aunt of many nieces and nephews.

The memorial mass will be offered on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 10:30 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 44 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery.

Donations in Cathy’s memory may be made to the Centenary United Methodist Church/Community Lunch Program, 108 N. Union Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530 or to the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association, 8588 Potter Drive, Suite 500, Sarasota, FL 34238.a
