Obituary for Hrefna Jonsdottir

Hrefna Jonsdottir, 76, of Lambertville, NJ, died on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at Neshaminy Manor in Warrington, PA.

Born in Westmann Island, Iceland, Hrefna studied fine art before coming to the United States. She first made her home Astoria, Queens, but a weekend trip to Lambertville decided her future. She relocated to Lambertville and opened a poster and framing business. The Hrefna Jonsdottir Gallery on Bridge Street evolved into a fine art center featuring the work of many local and international artists. Hrefna’s keen eye and sense of style made her an invaluable resource for home owners, decorators and corporate clients. She had a gift to match the perfect frame with the any painting, photo or diploma. Hrefna nurtured many young Delaware Valley artists, recognizing their gifts and encouraging their development. Proud of her Icelandic heritage, she returned to Iceland often and enjoyed showing the Delaware Valley to visiting Icelandic relatives and friends. She had a gentle humor and was a gracious and caring friend. She was a member of the Lambertville Area Chamber of Commerce and was a supporter of Safe in Hunterdon.

Hrefna is survived by her sister Gudrun “Lilla” Jonsdottir and her husband Thrainn; her niece Hrefna Jonsdottir, her nephew Jon Halldor and her great niece Emma, all of Iceland; her dear friend Daniel Van Osten of Doylestown and an extended family of artists, friends, neighbors and colleagues in the Lambertville business community.
A memorial gathering will take place on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, from 6 to 8 pm at the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, 21 York Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530 (vhmfh.com).
