Obituary for Harry Cullen Hartpence Jr.

Harry C. Hartpence, Jr., 94, of West Amwell, NJ and Holmes Beach, Florida, died on Friday, August 10, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in West Amwell, Harry grew up in Lambertville and was a longtime West Amwell resident. He owned and operated Hartpence Builders, based in West Amwell. He was a skilled contractor who always made sure his jobs were done properly. He built over 150 houses in the Lambertville-New Hope area. Harry’s beloved wife Marian served as secretary and office manager for the business. Marian and Harry were devoted to their family and their community. They were active members of the First Presbyterian Church in Lambertville. Harry was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He was a Seaman First Class, serving in both Europe and the Pacific theaters. His service took him to 32 countries. He was a member of the Lambertville VFW, the Lambertville-New Hope Rotary Club and the Lambertville-Hopewell Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, gardening (he particularly loved irises) and spending time at his retirement home on Anna Maria Island in Florida. He treasured his time there with Marian and they loved entertaining family and friends there.

Harry was the loving husband to the late Marian Grace Hager Hartpence for 62 years until her passing in 2011. He is survived by his children and their spouses Desre and Donald Pidcock, Heather and Douglas Pursell and Boyd and Sharon Hartpence, all of West Amwell; his grandchildren LaNelle and James Gallagher of Stockton, NJ; Crystal and Charles Robertson of Newark, DE; Torrey and Melissa Pursell of Ringoes, NJ; Brent and Diana Pursell of West Amwell; Courtney Hartpence, Bo Hartpence and Madison Hartpence, all of West Amwell; his great-grandchildren Donald, Dillon and Carin Grace Gallagher; Brooke, Jeffrey, Jacob , Tristen and Antonia Pursell; his brothers Norman Hartpence of Lambertville and Marvin Hartpence of Interlocken, FL; and his many nieces and nephews and their families. Harry was also predeceased by his parents Harry C. and Margaret Schaible; his sisters Laura Cromwell, Norma Hoover and Vivian Hartpence and his brothers Donald, Frank, Russell and Clarence Hartpence.

Committal services with military honors will be held on Wednesday, August 15, at 11:30 am at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Avenue, Newtown, PA 18940. Attendees should gather at the cemetery office at 11:15 am.
