Obituary for Dorothy "Dee" Rosenwald (Illingworth)

Dorothy "Dee" Rosenwald (Illingworth)
Dorothy “Dee” Rosenwald, 96, of New Hope, Pennsylvania, died on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at her home.

Born in Kearny, New Jersey, Dee was raised in Southport, Lancashire, England. After college and launching a career as a teacher, Dee joined the World War II effort, first as a welfare war worker assisting with the evacuation of children in jeopardy and as a designer of Red Cross posters and materials. In 1944 she joined the US Women’s Army Corps. She served in Europe as an Information and Education officer educating military personnel and as an officer for the Adjunct General’s Information Bureau in Paris. At the end of the war, Dee returned to New Jersey and later moved to New York City. She joined the staff of the New Yorker magazine as an administrator and writer. She later worked at the British Travel Association. Dee was an accomplished artist working in various media. She studied sculpting and eventually joined the Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan CT. Dee sculpted in wood, metal and clay. She was also a talented print maker. Her work was featured in many local shows. In 2011 a major New Hope art exhibit, “Deux Grand Dames” celebrated Dee’s work and that of fellow New Hope artist Dorothy Grider.

Dee and her future husband, Robert L. Rosenwald, moved to New Hope in 1967 and were married in 1968 on the deck of their home overlooking the Delaware River. She was a 50 year member of the New Hope Historical Society. With her good friend New Hope Mayor Larry Keller, she organized over 40 bus trips for the Society to places of historic interest. She volunteered as a docent at the society’s home, the Perry Mansion Museum, as well as at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown. The Historical Society honored Dorothy’s years of dedication with a special celebration on her 90th birthday. She served on the Borough of New Hope’s Historic Architectural Review Board.

She was the wife of the late Robert Lessing Rosenwald, the daughter of the late Fred and Gladys Threlfall Illingworth and the sister of the late Captain James Illingworth. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Christopher and Vickie Reshower of Janesville, WI; her granddaughters Rachel Reshower of Sussex, WI and Emily Reshower of Janesville; her nephews Jonathan and Stephen Illingworth and her niece Susan Illingworth Locke and her extended family of New Hope friends and neighbors.

A memorial gathering will be held on Tuesday evening, May 2, 2017 from 5 to 7 pm at the Logan Inn, 10 West Ferry Street, New Hope, PA 18938.

A committal service with military honors for both Dorothy and Robert will take place on Wednesday morning, May 3, at 11 am at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Avenue, Newtown, PA. Please gather at the cemetery office at 10:45 am prior to the start of services.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Hope Historical Society, PO Box 41, New Hope, PA 18938 or to New Hope Arts, 2 Stockton Avenue, New Hope, PA 189
