Obituary for Roger Lewis Aspeling

Roger L. Aspeling, 83, of Lambertville, New Jersey, died on Sunday, April 1, 2018, at his home.

Born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Roger lived in England and Canada before coming to New Jersey. He lived in Lambertville since 1992. He was a pharmacist working in research and development. He retired from Janssen Pharmaceutical in 1992 after 29 years of service. He worked for them in Piscataway and in Hopewell Township and returned to the company as needed after retirement. His expertise was essential in the development of many important medications, Imodium and Nizoral among them. As a younger man Roger worked as a ship’s chemist for P & O Orient Lines, transporting Ten Pound Poms to Australia and New Zealand, and as a sales representative for Ortho Pharmacuetical.

Roger was active in his community. He belonged to the Lambertville Streetwalkers, the Lambertville Historical Society and the Delta Brotherhood International. He served as the president of the board of Historic Mt. Hope Cemetery in Lambertville where he was essential in computerizing the 200 year old cemetery’s records. He was a world traveler who made friends wherever he went. For many years he wintered in Cape Town, South Africa for the warm weather and to spend time with his family. Out of his concern for his neighbors Roger lobbied for the City of Lambertville to add a traffic signal at the foot of Swan Street and patrolled with the Lambertville City Town Watch. With his spouse ”Porter” , Roger opened their home to friends and neighbors. Together they were gracious and generous hosts.

He was the son of the late Ike and Bella Black Aspeling and the brother of the late Molly Buchanan, Gordon and Mike Aspeling. He is survived by his spouse John “Porter” Lee, his daughter Barbara Aspeling of Lambertville and an extended family of friends and associates.

There will be a memorial gathering on Friday evening, April 6, from 6 to 8 pm at the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, 21 York Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530 (vhmfh.com).

Memorial donations in Roger’s memory may be made to Hunterdon Hospice, 2100 Wescott Drive, Flemington, NJ 08822 or to PBS/Channel 13 (thirteen.org).
