Obituary

Joseph F. Aiello, 71, of West Amwell, NJ, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019 at the Samaritan Hospice in Mt. Holly, New Jersey.

Born in Irvington, NJ, Joe grew up in Jersey City and later in Brick. He had been a West Amwell resident since 1983. Joe retired from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in 2016 after 41 years of service. Joe served for over 20 years as the NJDEP’s Quality Assurance Officer and managed the State’s Environmental Laboratory Certification Program. Joe was also a member of the EPA/State Focus Group for Developing a National Accreditation Program, a member of the NELAC Board of Directors, the first Chair of the NELAC Accrediting Authority Committee and founder of New Jersey’s Environmental Laboratory Advisory Committee. At the time of his retirement he was the Assistant Director of Release Prevention and Quality Assurance.
Joe attended Salem College where he was a member of the Omega Delta Phi fraternity before serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War and was discharged as a sergeant. He later earned his bachelor’s degree in marine biology from Stockton State College and his MBA from Rider University.
Joe was a past Grand Knight with the St. John the Evangelist Council of the Knights of Columbus in Lambertville, served as a District Deputy as well as the Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree for the Bishop Griffin Assembly. As a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Joe served on the parish’s 150th anniversary committee.

Joe was a devoted family man. He, with his beloved wife Mary Jo, was dedicated to their children and grandchildren. He loved them, was proud of them always, took special pride in their achievements and encouraged them to do their best. Joe loved to tease his family and friends and had a quick sense of humor.

Joe is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Jo Michalek Aiello; their children Staff Sgt. Amanda K. Aiello and her husband Staff Sgt. Andrew McIntire of Fort Jackson, SC; Christina M. Rice and her husband Sgt. Thomas Rice of Ft. Bragg, NC and Joseph M. Aiello, of West Amwell; his grandchildren Joseph H., Giana K. and Bianca S. McIntire; and his brother Kevin T. Aiello of Brick. Joe was predeceased by his parents Joseph C. and Lenore Otto Aiello and by his brother Robert D. Aiello.

The funeral mass will be offered on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at 9:15 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 44 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530. Committal services with military honors will follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.

There will be calling hours on Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm at the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, 21 York St., Lambertville, NJ 08530 (www.vhmfh.com ).
