Dr.Lloyd J. Newbaker, Jr., ED.D., 87, of Delaware Township, NJ, died at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, July 18, 2019.

Born in Mt. Bethel, PA, Lloyd grew up in Portland, PA. He was the son of the late Lloyd J. Newbaker, Sr. and Mabel Cron Newbaker. His career was launched as a teacher in Abington Township, PA. He served as the Principal of schools in Pen Argyl, PA and in the Hopewell Valley Regional School District in New Jersey at the Scotch Road School and was the first principal at the Bear Tavern Elementary School. Lloyd was the Assistant Superintendent of schools in Northampton County, PA and the Superintendent of schools in Rockaway Township, NJ. He was the Executive Director of the New Jersey School Boards Association for 11 years. He was instrumental in communicating the needs of public education to then Governor Thomas Kean and the members of the legislature. He also served as the Special Assistant to Commissioner of Education Saul Cooperman and as the Assistant Commissioner of Vocational Education. After retiring Lloyd worked as an educational consultant to O’Brien-Kreitzberg and Associates. Lloyd earned his Undergraduate Degree in education at East Stroudsburg University; his Masters in education and his Doctorate in administration from Lehigh University. Throughout his career Lloyd was always focused on the advancement of students and creating opportunities for their successful futures.

Lloyd was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. His kindness and generosity spoke louder than any words. He was a kind and compassionate person. A loving family patriarch, he had a quick wit and a dry sense of humor. His family was extremely important and he treasured every opportunity to gather them together at his beloved Rosemont Ridge Farm. He enjoyed spending time in the gardens and fields surrounding his home. He spent many years nurturing a flock of sheep, adopted burros from the Grand Canyon and raised cattle from time to time. He was a history buff with a focus on colonial times and appreciated the area’s importance during the American Revolution. Lloyd especially enjoyed traveling in the United States and abroad. He looked forward to spending the winter months in Old San Juan Puerto Rico.

He is survived by his devoted wife Barbara J. Bongiorno Newbaker; his children Barbara Lynne Newbaker of Pennington, NJ; Kenneth J. Newbaker and his wife Lori Richards of Washington, DC; and Leigh N.
