Obituary
Jill A. Becker, 76, of Lambertville, New Jersey, died on Friday, August 23, 2019, at the Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington, NJ.
Born in New York City, Jill earned her undergraduate degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and a master’s degree in English from Harvard University. Later Jill earned a master’s degree in library science from the Pratt Institute Graduate School of Library and Information Services. She enjoyed a successful career as a librarian in Brooklyn for the City of New York. During these years her interest in public health and specifically in mental health treatment for the poor grew and led her to obtain a master’s degree in psychology from the New School of Social Research. Thereafter Jill embarked on her second career, as a licensed psychologist providing mental health counseling at local agencies in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Her compassion and sense of social justice led her to focus on treating those most in need of counseling without regard to their financial resources. She took great satisfaction from her work, retiring only last year from her job at Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Trenton. All her efforts were focused on maximizing time with her clients, providing them consistent, practical guidance and minimizing paperwork whenever possible.
Jill was an active supporter of art and artists in the Lambertville-New Hope area. She was a particularly discriminating judge of design in virtually all mediums, although textiles remained her specialty. An avid reader, she walked to the library several times a week. A frequent foreign traveler, she spoke Italian well. She wrote for her own enjoyment, gardened and was famous for her imaginatively prepared vegetable dishes. She enjoyed all Lambertville had to offer, but particularly loved films at the Acme and walking the canal path. She was a parishioner at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Lambertville.
Jill is survived by her cousins Marina Zurkow and Jeffrey Zurkow and many friends and neighbors.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 12:30 pm at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 50 York Street, Lambertville, NJ.
A reception will follow in the parish hall.
Donations in Jill’s memory may be made to Planned Parenthood or to any other social service agency of your choice.
