Obituary for Marie Antoinette Giannelli (Cappuccio)

Marie A. Giannelli, of Lambertville, New Jersey, formerly of Paterson and Hawthorne, NJ, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2020, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Lisa.

Born and raised in Paterson, NJ, Marie first went to work at a shoe factory in Paterson and later was a retail shoe sales person, which was then considered a man’s job. She also worked for her parents at their luncheonette.

With her husband Matty, Marie owned and operated C and G Bar and Grill in Hawthorne for over 25 years. Marie prepared the meals for the tavern customers, tended bar and sharpened her pool skills. Marie later worked with her daughter, Sister Donna, at the pre-school and nursery at St. Gerard’s Church in Haledon, NJ. In 2003 Marie moved to Lambertville where she worked at Coda, a home décor store owned by her son and daughter-in-law. Marie was an excellent cook and loved preparing meals for family and friends. She was a gifted needle worker, sewing, crocheting, and knitting, making scarves, caps, sweaters and mittens for those she loved. Marie was rarely idle.

Marie was devoted to her family. She loved working with her husband and later with her children. She had a special relationship with her daughter-in-law, Lisa, who she treasured. She cherished her grandsons and their families and in March celebrated the birth of her third great-grandchild. Marie never rested until she was sure that all her family members were cared for. For many years Friday nights were reserved for family card games, good food, and fond memories.

A woman of deep faith, Marie was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Lambertville.

Marie was the wife of the late Matthew C. Giannelli , the mother of the late Sister Donna Marie Giannelli, the daughter of the late Andrew and Emma DeMarco Cappuccio and the sister of the late Paul and Carmen Cappuccio. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Andrew and Lisa Van Pelt Giannelli of Stockton; her grandsons and their families Aidan Giannelli and Edward Lysaght of Milford, NJ; Kieran Giannelli and Courtney Ashman and their sons Rafe and Leif of Stockton and Christian and Melissa Muller Giannelli and their daughter Pippa of Huntington Valley, PA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
