Obituary for Sallie Rochford

Sallie Rochford, 78, of West Amwell, NJ, died on Monday, May 18, 2020.

The world lost a gentle & loving person on Monday when Sallie lost her two-week battle against COVID-19. Sallie had a large circle of friends gathered over the years, each held with loving care through many trials of life. She was an excellent listener and genuinely cared. She would laugh & cry with you and always remember the times you spent together.

Born in Trenton, Sallie has been a resident of Lambertville & West Amwell Township for over 40 years. She was an accomplished office administrator and computer operations manager for 26 years with Mobil Oil Corporation in Pennington, NJ. Earlier she worked for the State of New Jersey’s Office of Unemployment and De Laval Turbine. After retiring from Mobil, Sallie worked in the office of the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home. She retired 10 years ago.

Sallie contracted polio when she was 2-years old. She lived her entire life with courage, dignity and determination. She swam, rode bicycles & horses, climbed mountains, and built some beautiful birdhouses and other woodworking projects. She never acknowledged her disability and would discourage others from doing so.

Sallie’s life centered around the home she loved and her treasured partner, the late Patricia Foy. Sallie and Pat had a unique relationship built on love & respect. They spent many years together sharing a household and fond memories of life. Sallie loved to laugh. She enjoyed photography and nature, working in her garden, growing both flowers & vegetables. She loved all animals and was an avid birdwatcher, keeping her bird feeders well-stocked.

In addition to her very-special friend and life-partner Patricia Foy, Sallie was predeceased by her parents William & Ruth Kent Rochford, her sister Patricia Johnson, her brothers William Jr., Robert & John. She was also predeceased by her nephews Brian, Robert & Keith and niece, Joyce. She especially missed her sister-in-law Evelyn who died last year.

Sallie is survived by her nieces Kim Petro (Richard), Lindy Jordan, Robin Becquette (Larry) and Sher Rochford and nephews Bill Jordan (Sandy), & William Rochford (Marg) and her great nieces Daina Emmons, Erica Mellor and Jill Rochford and many more great nieces and great nephews She is also survived by her friend of almost 60 years, Carol Kovacs (Michael) & her sister-in-law BJ Foy (Kathy) and by many, many other friends & acquaintances. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her neighbors Tricia Faught-Matz (Gary) and children Lilly & Dylan, and Ed McElroy, who helped her over many years and through her last days.

Rest in Peace, our dear sweet Sallie and may God reunite you with those you love and with all of us who you have touched so warmly over the years.

Private funeral services are under the direction of the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, Lambertville, NJ 08530 (vhmfh.com).
