Obituary for Steven Douglas Brown

Steven Douglas Brown passed away on November 9, 2020. He was 64 years old.

One of seven children growing up in a funeral service family, Steve was not inspired to become a funeral director, but rather a florist. He studied floral design at Cook’s Florist in Runnemede. He had a brief stint with his own shop, Sunshine Florist, in Silverton, NJ. Business was not in his wheelhouse. He was pure genius with an artistic temperament, too. That artistic temperament afforded him the ‘opportunity’ to seek new employment often. He went on to work for Sanzone in Bellmawr as well as several places in Philadelphia, the last being Cedrone’s on Lombard Street. His avant garde floral designs were featured in bridal magazines and runways. His last employer spoke of Steve’s “hands of gold”.

A self-proclaimed ‘city boy’, he loved the hustle on the street, the busses, South Philly and The Mummers strutting down Broad Street. He loved children, especially his nieces and nephews. To receive a phone call from them was like Christmas to him. He would talk about it for weeks. He taught the neighborhood kids in Philly social responsibility. They would pick-up litter, so they could get an ice pop from Mr Steve. He would cook a turkey and a ham for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so the neighborhood could have a holiday meal. He simply loved to be the host. He was a giver. He was the one to help somebody down on their luck. This was often to his loss, but he continued to try. He wanted to believe the best in people.

Steve was the son of the late Harvey and Hazel Loftis Brown. He is survived by his sisters Ruthann B. (Thomas) Disotell of White Township, NJ and Mary E. Brown of Barnegat, NJ ; his brothers Donald A. (Cynthia) Graham of Manahawkin, NJ, D. Mark Brown of Connersville, KY, D. David (Arlene) Brown of Spinnerstown, PA and John H. (Donna )Brown of Coconut Creek, FL, and a many treasured nieces and nephews.
The Brown family will host a family memorial gathering in the Spring.
