Obituary for Mary Lucilla Hoagland (Holcombe)

Mary L. Hoagland, a lifelong resident of West Amwell, NJ, died on Friday, February 3, 2023, at Doylestown Hospital, Doylestown, PA. She was 94 years old.

Mary and her twin sister, Julia, were born on July 14, 1928. They were the daughters of Earl and Bertha Matthews Holcombe. Mary grew up in a large and loving family. She graduated from Lambertville High School and was a dedicated wife and mother. Mary was a strong personality, quick witted and generous. Whenever there was a need she was the first to volunteer. Mary was involved in the activities of her children and her community. For over 30 years she served as a leader for the local girl scout troop. An animal lover, Mary was an award winning breeder of English Toy Spaniels. She was a member of the American Kennel Club and the Hunterdon Hills Kennel Club where she successfully showed her dogs. Her love for animals extended to her work life where she served for 32 years as the animal control officer for West Amwell Township and Lambertville. Mary was tireless in her efforts to rescue, assist and place orphaned animals in loving homes. She also assisted at the West Amwell Recycling Center. Mary was an active member of Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the West Amwell Volunteer Fire Company and the West Amwell Wonders.

Mary was the wife of the late Donald Hoagland and the mother of the late Danny Hoagland. She was also predeceased by her twin sister and her husband Julia and Bob Kerr and her brother Donald Holcombe and his wife Hazel and her many other brothers and sisters and their spouses.

Mary is survived by her children Kathy Hoagland Sheaffer of Levittown, PA; Randy M. Hoagland, Sr. and his wife Lolly of Lambertville, NJ and Holly Hoagland of Plumsteadville, PA; Her grandchildren and their families Christina Weber and her partner Jonathan ; Pam Weber; Crystal Weber and her children Kylee, Brian “Bubba” and Destiny; Randy M. Hoagland, Jr. and his wife Tammy and their children Alyssa, Randy M. III “Bubba”, Adam, and Lisa Hoagland and her partner Donnell and their children Leah and Drew; Ryan Hoagland and his wife Charlotte and their daughter Aspen; Donnie and his wife Amanda and their son Logan; and Ashley Ilex-Reed Pysher and her husband Ben. Mary is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a large extended circle of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 10, 2023 at 12 noon at the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, 21 York Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530. Rev. Bradford Morgan, pastor of the Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church will officiate.
